Old House Warming at 603 Tennessee Street

  • 603 Tennessee Street Lawrence, KS, 66044 United States (map)

Location: 603 Tennessee Street

Date: Saturday, May 6th, 2023

Time: 1-3pm

Lawrence Preservation Alliance is excited to invite you to join us for an Old House Warming at 603 Tennessee Street on Saturday, May 6th, 1-3pm.

The original wood clad siding house that stood at 603 Tennessee Street was owned by J.B. Sands, the local farrier, and burned down in Quantrill’s Raid, on August 21st, 1863.

The home we see on this site today, a two and a half story, pyramidal hipped, brick Colonial Revival with a full width, hipped roof porch supported by Tuscan columns, was built in 1900.

Attorney James Mitchell and his wife, Virginia Baldwin Mitchell, owned the home from 1908 through 1930.

From 1957 until 2005, the home was owned by Dr. Victoria Kimbrough, who moved to Lawrence from Clarksdale, Mississippi and was one of only two ophthalmologists when she arrived.

In 2008, the home was purchased and renovated to sell, but because of the economic downturn at the time, the home did not sell, so the owners completed a few additional renovations (fire suppression system, exit signage, and ADA accessibility) and ran The Runaway Pony B&B from 2010 through June 2015.

In June 2015, the current owner, Evan Holt, purchased the home and returned it to a private residence, adding a more modern design aesthetic throughout. The home is decorated with an eclectic mix of vintage modern and Asian antiques.

Recently, Karl Ramberg constructed limestone walls and pillars with carved limestone insets.  Karl utilized the techniques that would have been employed in 1900 when the house was built.  The yard is a blend of Dig Art Landscaping and Evan’s green thumb.

We’re thrilled that Evan has shared his graciously welcomed LPA for an Old Housewarming celebration and look forward to seeing you all on May 6th!

This is a free event for old house enthusiasts. LPA membership is not required to enter, but memberships will be available for purchase.
