The Lawrence Preservation Alliance is excited to announce two upcoming events that promise to engage history enthusiasts and heritage advocates alike. We invite both our valued members and the general public to join us in celebrating and preserving Lawrence's unique past. Mark your calendars and make plans to attend these gatherings!

LPA's Annual Meeting

Sunday, September 24th

1:30-3:00 pm

Watkins Museum
1047 Massachusetts Street
Lawrence, KS 66044

Our Annual Meeting is an opportunity to unite as a community dedicated to the preservation of Lawrence's historical treasures. The event will commence with a quick business meeting, during which we will highlight the remarkable achievements of the Lawrence Preservation Alliance throughout the year and provide a glimpse into our exciting plans for 2024.

Following the business portion, we have a special treat in store for you. Dennis Domer, LPA Board Member Emeritus, and editor of the recently published "Embattled Lawrence Volume 2: The Enduring Struggle for Freedom," will be our guest speaker. Dennis, also one of the authors of this captivating volume, will not only discuss the progress on the forthcoming installment, "Embattled Lawrence Volume 3: Building the City," but he will also offer a sneak peek into the content of this soon-to-be-released volume. Be sure not to miss Dennis's insights, including his article on the introduction of a modern sewer system to our beloved town.

Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Our Partnership with Black Jack Battlefield

Saturday, October 14th

1:30-3:30 pm

Black Jack Battlefield
163 East 2000 Road
Wellsville, KS, 66092

Join us in commemorating the momentous twentieth anniversary of our partnership with Black Jack Battlefield. Twenty years ago, LPA worked with the Black Jack Battlefield board to preserve the site and for the last twenty years, their Board of Trustees has worked tirelessly to secure and preserve the site of this pre-Civil War battle, a place where forces led by John Brown and Henry Pate clashed in a pivotal moment in history.

During this special event, we will take a moment to reflect on our shared history and the significant strides made in safeguarding this hallowed ground. Additionally, we are honored to host the Douglas County Sustainability Office staff, who will provide valuable insights into the new Douglas County Open Space Plan currently in development. This plan promises to be a vital step forward in preserving the natural beauty and historical significance of our region.

These events are open to all, whether you're a member of the Lawrence Preservation Alliance or simply passionate about Lawrence's rich history and heritage. Feel free to invite friends and family who share your enthusiasm for preserving our town's unique legacy.

We look forward to seeing you at these events.
